EP. 56: From Backpacker to Cybersecurity Specialist: Philipp Rieth on Attitude, Initiative and Building an IT Career
Over thirty years of founding, operating, and advising managed service providers across Australia, Nick and I have witnessed the exact same talent crisis unfold time and time again. Business owners consistently reach out believing their bottleneck is technical capability. They obsess over finding certified engineers who arrive preloaded with an exhaustive list of vendor accreditations, assuming that technical credentials alone will stabilise service delivery. What three decades of operating MSPs has taught us is that technical certifications do not solve operational friction. Skills can be taught, workflows can be trained, and technologies change rapidly, but foundational attitude, emotional resilience, personal accountability, and genuine curiosity cannot be forced into an employee. When MSP leaders hire purely for technical proficiency while neglecting character, they inherit toxic friction, high churn, and reactive service desks. In this episode of MSP Mastery Podcast, we sat down with Philipp Rieth, currently a senior cybersecurity specialist at Emerging IT in Melbourne. Philipp first walked into our lives ten years ago as a twenty year old German backpacker whom we hired sight unseen at DWM Solutions based entirely on trusted personal endorsement. His journey from manual labour and junior support work to leading penetration testing teams reinforces the foundational resourcing frameworks we teach every growing MSP.

Over thirty years of founding, operating, and advising managed service providers across Australia, Nick and I have witnessed the exact same talent crisis unfold time and time again. Business owners consistently reach out believing their bottleneck is technical capability.
Redefining Hiring: Why Attitude Trumps Technical Badges
Every mature MSP eventually reaches an inflection point where conventional hiring methods fail. Placing generic advertisements on job boards often yields applicants with immaculate resumes who lack the personal agility required in a fast paced managed services environment. Nick and I have always operated under a firm principle: you recruit for character, energy, and work ethic, and you train the technical stack.
When Christian, an exceptional technician who previously worked with us at DWM Solutions, returned to Germany and told Nick that he had found a young technician who wanted to work in regional Victoria, Nick did not scrutinise a resume. We did not even read it. The hiring decision rested on a trusted endorsement and Philipp’s obvious drive to venture outside his comfort zone.
Philipp’s perspective inside Emerging IT confirms why this mindset remains vital for operational leadership today. When building their dedicated cybersecurity team, they deliberately prioritised raw coachability and curiosity over extensive existing expertise. A recent junior recruit with minimal direct cybersecurity experience managed to accelerate his capability twentyfold within twelve months purely because he brought hunger and openness to every challenge. When business owners hire an individual with humility and relentless curiosity, that person rapidly outpaces an entitled senior hire whose skills remain static.
The Antidote to Entitlement: Building Grounded Service Desks
One of the greatest operational hazards inside a growing IT business is technical arrogance. We have all encountered senior engineers who possess deep technical knowledge yet treat tier one dispatchers, account managers, or even clients with condescension. This behaviour creates internal friction, crushes team morale, and damages client retention far faster than any isolated technical outage.
Philipp’s unconventional path through regional Australia and New Zealand provides an exceptional case study in character development. Before securing his permanent foothold in corporate IT, he spent months labouring in Adelaide, paving driveways, landscaping, and manually loading eight tonnes of potatoes into delivery trucks each day. He took roles as a quad bike tour guide and scenic driver in Queenstown just to keep moving forward.
As Philipp observed during our conversation, completing physically demanding, foundational work strips away any false sense of entitlement. It instils an enduring appreciation for every level of an organisational structure. When a technical specialist respects the office postie, the junior dispatcher, and the board director equally, it transforms service delivery. Technicians who approach clients and colleagues with genuine humility build long term trust, communicate with clarity, and eliminate the defensive elitism that plagues immature IT providers.
Autonomous Value Creation: Moving Beyond Ticket Processing
A chronic complaint Nick and I hear from MSP founders is that their senior engineers act like passive ticket processors. Technicians wait to be assigned work, escalate problems at the first sign of ambiguity, and demand pay rises based on tenure rather than performance. Tenure without expanded capability does not merit higher compensation; true leverage is built on autonomous value creation.
In our operational frameworks, high performance employees are those who actively search for operational bottlenecks, resolve systemic problems, and report back after the solution is deployed. Philipp highlighted this exact professional behaviour during our discussion. Across the multiple IT organisations he has served, his career progression accelerated whenever he identified operational gaps and solved them before management even realised they existed.
For an MSP owner or service manager juggling client escalations, margins, and staff coordination, an engineer who takes independent initiative is invaluable. When a team member spots a recurring alert across multiple client tenants, scripts an automated remediation, and presents the completed result, they remove immense operational drag from leadership. MSP owners must cultivate an internal culture that rewards measured risk and proactive problem solving rather than maintaining rigid hierarchies that penalise initiative.
Case Study: Tenacity as the Ultimate Competitive Advantage
The defining difference between average performers and exceptional industry contributors is how they respond when their original roadmap collapses. Throughout our decades in business, Nick and I have navigated market crashes, vendor shifts, and major economic disruptions. Resilience is the single greatest asset an MSP founder or technical leader can possess.
Philipp’s pursuit of his long term career vision in Australia stands out as a powerful masterclass in tenacity. After his initial working holiday visa expired, his application for a standard visitor visa was summarily rejected in Darwin, giving him seven days to leave the country. Rather than abandoning his goal, he relocated to New Zealand, pivoted into adventure tourism, and worked additional trades while Nick and I initiated employer sponsorship discussions.
When immigration regulations suddenly changed in 2017, completely invalidating his practical IT credentials for Australian sponsorship, his pathway collapsed a second time. The revised regulations demanded a formal degree. Facing this hurdle, Philipp returned to Germany and enrolled in an intensive Bachelor of Science in Cybersecurity, graduating from a rigorous program where only twenty five of the original one hundred and twenty candidates completed the course. When global border closures struck in 2019, delaying his relocation for another three years, he secured ethical hacking roles in Germany to deepen his technical depth.
When borders finally reopened, Philipp was not merely an aspiring traveller with good intentions. He arrived in Melbourne with an elite degree, deep practical experience in penetration testing, and an unshakeable mindset forged through years of overcoming systemic obstacles. Emerging IT recognised that unique grit during a multi round selection process, and that same resilience now protects their enterprise clients against critical security threats.
Strategic Takeaways for MSP Leadership
Building an exceptional managed service provider requires disciplined operational hygiene, but above all, it demands a deliberate approach to human capital. Reflecting on Philipp’s journey, Nick and I encourage every business leader to evaluate their operational foundations:
First, audit your hiring scorecards to elevate attitude, curiosity, and cultural alignment above static certifications. You can easily train a determined, coachable individual on network administration, firewall policies, or cloud migrations, but you cannot train basic drive.
Second, foster an environment that actively rewards autonomy and continuous learning. Make it safe for your technicians to step forward, identify operational deficiencies, and engineer proactive solutions that protect your client base.
Third, model and demand humility across your entire team. Eradicate technical arrogance from your service desk by recognising engineers who communicate with empathy, treat all colleagues with respect, and value client outcomes above technical ego.
